Fulginiti Pavilion : The Galleries
The Galleries in the Pavilion will inspire a blending of the
creative with the scientific in health care. It is the fine
arts that examine the social and personal settings of health
care, just as the sciences investigate biological life processes.
And just as the sciences require facilities to house their
laboratories and support their work, so too must the arts
have a distinctive place to celebrate human creativity. This
is especially true at an academic health center. Today's physicians
learn to scrutinize patients in terms of their most discrete
components and in the process often lose sight of the rich
human dramas that are the backdrop of their practice settings.
Nothing is more powerful than the visual arts to serve as
a corrective to this "excess" in today's health
care. Seeing a painting or a photograph in a gallery setting
not only increases physicians' observational skills, it also
stimulates their imagination and heightens their empathy and
moral sensitivity.
To insure that the arts get incorporated into student learning,
as well as the daily life of the health sciences center, the
Pavilion will have three galleries. A 1000 square foot exhibition
gallery will provide a secure venue for curated art, photography,
and multi-media exhibitions. A video/internet gallery will
be available for interactive exhibitions that complement other
exhibits and programs in the building. A gallery in the building's
south entrance will be used to host ceramic and sculpture
exhibitions, as well as other educational displays.
