Title: Genomics and Personalized Medicine: Facts, Fiction, Future? July, 24-25, 2009 Village at Breckenridge Conference Center Breckenridge, Colorado

This is the thirteenth conference in a series that addresses current ethical and legal issues related to human genetics. The focus of this year's conference is the promise of translational genomic research to radically alter health care through new methods of disease prevention and novel drug treatments. For some traits, specific mutations have predictive power, useful in personalized medicine. The bulk of genetic causation is often not easily localizable in specific sites in the genome. Thus, we have reason to think differently about personalized medicine and determine what that portends. Will the public’s investment in this research really lead to a “paradigm shift” For medicine? If it does, what ethical and social challenges will that raise for clinicians and the health care system? And how are those challenges best met in an era of increasingly restricted health care resources?
This broadly-based conference targets scientists, ethicists, legal professionals, legislators, health care professionals and physicians, businesses, ethics committee members, institutional review board members, and individuals interested in the ways in which personalized medicine will or will not alter health care. All attendees will have the opportunity to participate actively in all phases of the conference.
